What is chin liposuction?

Chin liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reshapes the contour of our neckline by removing excess submental (beneath the chin) fat which is what causes a ‘double chin’.

Although most common in overweight people, it’s possible to still have a double chin or at least a disproportionately large amount of fat under our chin despite being relatively lean

Conversely, you may have met people who had very sharp jawlines despite being relatively overweight–that’s just genetics for you!

The good news is that liposuction can permanently remove a double chin.

Chin liposuction and loose skin

While chin liposuction removes fat, it cannot help with loose skin which is a natural effect of aging.

loose skin that cannot be targeted with chin liposuction

For that, patients might consider a thread lift and chin liposuction combo, where liposuction targets fat and the thread lift tightens loose skin.

However, in the long run, chin liposuction can help prevent loose skin by reducing the fat it needs to stretch over.

Chin liposuction and scarring

All surgeries with incisions leave scars, but as smaller cannulas are used for chin liposuction, the scars are tiny, plus hidden out of sight beneath the chin and behind the ears.

Post recovery expectations

As chin liposuction itself is a relatively short procedure that doesn’t remove too much fat, improvements can be felt as soon as five to seven days post-operation, and six months is where most have fully recovered.

Of course, in practice, if the operation also includes other procedures such as a thread lift, recovery will take longer.

Recovery Timeline:

  • First Week: Localised swelling, numbness, bruising, and a need for bandage.
  • 2 to 4 Weeks: Swelling decreases, and many patients resume light activities by week four, though bandage still needed.
  • 6 Weeks: Swelling has subsided tremendously, with about 90% of final results visible.
  • 6 Months: Full results typically seen.

Early on in recovery, the neck can appear uneven due to fluid retention and bruising – this is perfectly normal.

This should go away on its own soon enough.

It can be discouraging, but remember these effects are temporary and soon enough it will go away on its own.

At any rate, your surgeon should be in frequent contact with you and will inform you if there’s anything to worry about – chances are all you need is some words of assurance and encouragement to get you through the first few days.
