What is stomach liposuction?

Stomach liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat from the upper and lower abdominal areas of the body.

Excessive fat in the upper abdomen leads to what is often called a ‘beer belly or ‘perut buncit’ in Bahasa Melayu.

It’s not just beer, calling it ‘teh tarik belly’ is just as valid!

Meanwhile, fat deposits in the lower abdomen gives a ‘muffin top’ look.

Even with diet and exercise, it’s very common to struggle with stubborn fat deposits in these areas, making stomach liposuction a popular procedure for both men and women.

Subcutaneous vs visceral stomach fat

When considering stomach liposuction, we need to know the difference between subcutaneous and visceral fat:

  • Subcutaneous fat: Just under the skin and removable with liposuction.
  • Visceral fat: Deep within the abdominal cavity and cannot be removed with liposuction.

Unfortunately, the stomach area is where we get a lot of both!

As you can see, visceral fat lies beneath the abdominal muscles–trust us, if the cannula goes that far, you’re going to have a very bad day!

Everyone has a mix of both, so you’ll still see results from stomach liposuction. However, if your fat is primarily visceral, managing expectations is key since liposuction won’t target those deeper deposits.

A quick test can help determine which type of fat you’re dealing with: Is it soft and jiggly (subcutaneous) or firm to the touch (visceral)?

Stomach liposuction and tummy tucks

Loose skin is a normal byproduct of liposuction, and with time will tighten on its own.

However, procedures that remove significant amounts of fat can result in a lot of loose skin, beyond what the body can restore without help.

It can happen any time there is rapid weight loss.

If a patient’s stomach liposuction involves significant fat removal, it’s a good idea to add a tummy tuck to remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal wall.

Post recovery expectations

As the stomach covers a large surface area and our abdominal muscles are heavily involved in daily activity, recovery can take longer.

Improvements can be felt five to seven days post-operation, and six months is where most have fully recovered.

Recovery Timeline:

  • First Week: Localised swelling, numbness, bruising, and a need for compression garments.
  • 2 to 4 Weeks: Swelling decreases, and many patients resume light activities by week four, though compression garments still needed.
  • 6 Weeks: Swelling has subsided tremendously, with about 90% of final results visible.
  • 6 Months: Full results typically seen.

Early on in recovery, the stomach can appear bloated due to fluid retention, and bruising – this is normal.

Yes, it’s discouraging, but remember these effects are temporary.
