What is arm liposuction?
Arm liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat from the upper arms.
The patient is first placed under general anesthesia and a mix of saline and medication is injected into the treatment area. This solution breaks up fat deposits which are then extracted through a thin, hollow metal rod known as a cannula.
Between 300ml to 3 litres (both arms) can be removed depending on the individual’s body.
This manually reshapes the arms to be more toned and defined, targeting fat deposits that diet and exercise alone cannot fix due to genetic predispositions (translation: some peoples’ bodies just love to store any excess fat in certain spots).
To be clear, arm liposuction CANNOT:
- Replace diet and exercise
- Help with-long term weight loss
- Cure cellulite, or
- Treat medical conditions that cause weight gain
Ideally, patients should be at or near their target weight, with liposuction being the finishing touch to achieve their desired arm shape.
Post recovery expectations
As arms are a smaller body part and not heavily involved in daily activity (like buttocks for sitting), recovery is relatively fast and straightforward.
There should be noticeable improvement seven to ten days after the procedure, and six months post-operation is where most have fully recovered.
Recovery Timeline:
- First Week: Localised swelling, numbness, bruising, and the need for compression garments.
- 2 to 4 Weeks: Swelling decreases, and many patients resume light activities by week four, though compression garments still needed.
- 6 Weeks: Swelling has subsided tremendously, with about 90% of final results visible.
- 6 Months: Full results typically seen.
Early on in recovery, arms often appear bloated due to fluid retention, bruising, and loose skin – this is normal!
Yes, it’s discouraging, but remember these effects are temporary.
You should be going for regular check-ups with your surgeon, and they’ll tell you if your symptoms are normal or if there’s anything to be concerned about.
