What is buttock liposuction?

Liposuction of the buttocks is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reshapes the silhouette and appearance of our backsides by removing excess fat.

It’s not about removing as much fat as possible, but strategic recontouring so our buttocks are in proportion to surrounding body parts (and often recontouring those body parts as well).

As the diagram below shows, it’s not just the buttocks that must be considered, but also:

  • Hips
  • Flanks, and
  • Various areas of our thighs

In the hands of an experienced surgeon, buttock liposuction leads to a more overall balanced figure, better definition.

Post recovery expectations

As buttock liposuction itself is a relatively short procedure that doesn’t remove too much fat, improvements can be felt as soon as five to seven days post-operation, and six months is where most have fully recovered.

Of course, in practice, if the operation also includes liposuction in other areas such as the thighs and stomach, it will take longer.

Recovery Timeline:

  • First Week: Localised swelling, numbness, bruising, and a need for compression garments.
  • 2 to 4 Weeks: Swelling decreases, and many patients resume light activities by week four, though compression garments still needed.
  • 6 Weeks: Swelling has subsided tremendously, with about 90% of final results visible.
  • 6 Months: Full results typically seen.

Early on in recovery, the buttocks can appear swollen due to fluid retention, and bruising – this is perfectly normal.

It can be very discouraging, but remember these effects are temporary and soon enough it will go away on its own.
